Quickie 28Dec13

Happy Saturday! This morning I am on the way to Anytime to get my squat on. My goal of getting a pull up by March 31 involves me working on all of my strength training as well as some cardio, because frankly I love it. I also am working on dropping a few more pounds from the 100 or so I’ve already bagged.

A pull up is a body weight exercise. So, by being lighter it should be easier to accomplish. Less weight to move = easier movement!

So, off I go to the gym. No sense in waiting until 2014. I never really believed in the power of a set day resolution. Resolve right now to run after your dreams. And dream big!

Doing ALL the things

So yesterday I was sitting at my computer working, thinking about what I was going to do with my evening. Hubby was out of town and I had some catching up to do on some Nerd Fitness related challenge goals.

So, I thought to myself “I’m going to do ALL the things.”

Sometimes I have the dumb.

Anyway, I went to Lifetime right after work with a plan in my head:

5:30-6:30 Cardio (I blame the 4 peanut butter cups I ate at lunch for my desire to do this. See previous posts about being a food addict. Still working on the “don’t punish food choices” piece of my recovery…)

6:30-7:15 Strictly Strength (I had promised a friend a week ago that I would take this with her.)

7:15-8:15 Yoga (I promised yet another friend I would take this yoga with her. What can I say? I love my friends!)

 

A couple things I didn’t consider…

Given the layout of the gym, the only machines that were near the studio that strength class would be held were treadmills, and I wasn’t in my running shoes.  I wanted to use an all motion trainer, but they were across the room, so I couldn’t watch for my friend.

So I hopped on the treadmill and walked it out at a 10-15% incline. This was good, but my shoes just aren’t good for me to be walking or running in. They are so flat, they are perfect for lifting, not so much for  treadmill action. I got a good 25 min and some 250 calories knocked out before it was time for strength class.

Strictly Strength was a good, small class (many of the other classes at Lifetime are chocked full of people, and usually have a line outside the door.) I went in and my friend helped me get the tools of torture for the evening:tools

The class wasn’t hard, persay, but I got a wicked knot in my hamstring that I couldn’t release. Once that happened, I was mostly miserable with every lower body move we did. FML. We used bands on the arms, and that was awesome. I need more work on my arms and back so it’s great to have some new moves that I can do! I had told my friend that I had to leave strength class a couple minutes early to get to yoga on time, and she was so gracious in offering to put my stuff up. Did I mention that I love my friends?

I moved on to Yoga and I was super excited to learn that the class that we were taking was Yin yoga- a relaxing restorative class. I so needed this.

Yin yoga, I learned, involves holding simple poses for long periods of time. It’s the opposite of other yogas (get it? yin v yang?) and I think this might have been the best yoga class I have attended. I really felt like my muscles were being relaxed in the stretches and never once did I feel uncomfortable (with vinyasa yoga I am Queen of the Wobble!)

 

So there you have it, my epic night of doing ALL the things.

I don’t know that I will smash them all into one again, but the classes I took were good (and I probably owe the SS trainer an explanation as to why I left early…)
